Although it may sound like a good idea on the surface, reporting rent payments to credit bureaus like Equifax, Experian and TransUnion could have serious unintended consequences.
In an op-ed appearing in The Hill on February 26, 2023, Chi Chi Wu and Stacey Tutt (National Housing Law Project) warn that if done wrong, reporting of rent payments to credit bureaus could thrust people already struggling to pay rent and make ends meet into homelessness.
